Symbol/Shinboru (2009)
Rating: 4/6
This is the weirdest movie I’ve seen in a long time. I came across the trailer sometime last year, so when I now know who Matsumoto Hitoshi is, thanks to my Downtown obsession, I had to see it when I found out it was available.
Basically, it’s like it seems in the trailer: A Japanese guy stuck in a room with walls full of angel penises. And every time he presses one, something happens. And of course he wants to get away from there.
You also have this side plot about a Mexican wrestler, with also a cursing nun involved, and that’s what the movie starts with.
Well, the funny thing is, in the end things make sense.
…sort of..
At least I think I understood the ending, but I guess there could be several interpretations.
Either way, suddenly it’s all “ahaaa, so that’s how it is”. And that’s when the movie gets good, and almost serious.
Almost.
Because the movie is a comedy, no doubt about that. And it is funny too. Matsumoto might not be a great actor, but he does it believably well as a weird guy stuck in a room.
The randomness is funny, I laughed, but it’s more “hehehe” than “HAHAHA!”, if you get what I mean. Maybe it was the wrestler-part which was kind of uninteresting. Maybe it’s just not my kind of humor. My guess is on the first alternative.
Still, I liked the ending, so I’ll give it a good rating just for that. The rest is good as well, but…something dragged it a bit, I just don’t know what it was.
Trailer:
The movie is not yet subtitled, as far as I know. So your language-knowledge will be put to a little test. It’s in Japanese, and Spanish with Japanese subs, but as the plot is simple, so are the lines. At least the Japanese ones, as he’s alone in a room.
