Jmovie: Alien vs Ninja(2010)

Rating: 4/6

When I first watched the trailer of this one, I thought for sure it was a wannabe-scary-action-movie with a low budget and bad effects.
Therefore I was really surprised by its epicness!

As the title may suggest, the movie is about a bunch of ninjas fighting an alien invasion.
For me at least, that sounds pretty awesome.

Here's the trailer:

Ok, this trailer was a bit better than the one I watched. It looks less cheezy.
But my expectations weren't that high, so that may have affected my judgement a bit, because I love this movie!

It manages to be rediculous and cool at the same time.

You have bodyparts, guts, goo and blood flying everywhere.
You have total idiots among the characters.
You have.. lots of other wacky stuff I won't tell to spoil the surprise.
And you have awesome ninja moves, which can make just about anything cool.

As expected, swords and ninja-stars are of course also present, and those parts are done quite well to my unprofessional opinion.

I don't know what more there is to say.
So to mention some bad things:

Though I like just about everything untill and after, I really don't like the end of the final battle or whatever. It goes from being funny-rediculous to just bad-rediculous, and it's not that entertaining.

Also, some effects are maybe not top class.
You can sometimes see the alien being a man in a suit, and it kind of looks like a dinosaur, but they give it lots of extra features, so it's ok I guess.
I find the rest of the bad effects tolerable, and they were expected, so it's not so bad.
It could've been a lot worse.

So even though it has these few faults, I really liked the movie.
Just one part and a few bad effects are certainly not enough to ruin that impression.

Fake tattoo. How badass.
Whether or not you'll like it as well all depends on what you expect.
If you want a serious sci-fi alien movie of the American kind, this may not be the movie for you.
But laugh at the foolish stuff and do some "eeew" and "wow", and you surely will enjoy the movie as much as I did XD

Drunken fist movies

I love movies with drunken fist!

Drunken fist, or Zui Quan, is a type of Chinese martial arts where you use certain movements to pretend that you are drunk. Although it might look kind of casual sometime, because they often use staggering movements and fluidity, but it's actually a really hard thing to master. I haven't tried of course, but I believe what I've heard. I don't think you can really be drunk while doing it:P
This kid looks really good:D

Due to the concept of drunk people fighting, this is perfect for movies. The story about someone getting super-power skills after quite an amount of wine is a familiar one.
Jackie Chan is the best one I've see at this in movies, maybe because he's so good at being foolish and skillfull at the same time, which fits the role really well. Drunk people are foolish, kung fu masters are skillfull.

He played in Drunken master(the first clip of the following video) in 1978(according to wikipedia), and it's really good. It's fun to see him young, and before Hollywood.

But as you can see, there are of course other movies and actors who has done it too, for example Jet Li.
I don't really know what I think about the kid with the bottle thoughXD Doing drunken fist is fine, but still, seing kids drinking alcohol is kind of disturbing.

But the theme is also used in anime, as in Naruto, where Rock Lee mistakenly drinks sake instead of medicine. This really made my day some years agoXD

Not too long ago, Jackie Chan did drunken fist in an American movie, called Forbidden kingdom. That was also really good, as one might expect:D

...why ze fack won't they let me embed the videos-.-
Well, you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNrnTuos2xk
Or a scene together with Jet Li here(Epic indeed): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn_44yfmLpA
Lol, look at things funny and you are its seeker..

True legend, a Chinese movie from last year, also had drunken fist. I think that's the newest one I've seen.

Generally, I think half the fun of movies with drunken fist, is the expectation. Especially if you know the movie has it, and at the big fight you see the main person for some reason drink alcohol.
Then you think "yey, here it comes!", and get all excited about it.
And still, if it comes unexpected, you think "can it be?:D ...Yes it is! awesome!" and get just as exited:D

Sadly, I haven't seen that many films with this theme, just a handful. But maybe I'd go sick of it if I saw it all the time, so that might be just as well though.
But some of the movies in the showcase video here seems quite good, so I simply must check them out:D

If you've never seen a movie with drunken fist in it, I think you'd better get started:D

Drunken master(1978)
, Forbidden kingdom(2008), true legend(2010) and probably some more can be bought at yesasia.com with free shipping(I simply love that page), or probably from amazon or ebay.
They can also be found for download at myasiancinema.com, but you have to be a member(it's free and no scam). Others can also be found there, awesome site.
But I guess it can be found somewhere else too where you don't have to register.
Or you can see it streamed here:

The karate kid (2010)

Rating: 6/6

I don’t really know if this one counts as an Asian movie, but much of the lines are in mandarin so I guess it’s ok^^

I was just really impressed by this movie. Here’s the plot, in case you didn’t know:

“The plot concerns a 12-year-old boy from Detroit who moves to China with his mother and runs afoul of the neighborhood bully. He makes an unlikely ally in the form of his aging maintenance man, Mr. Han, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets to self-defense.” – Wikipedia

Though I’m not that into the old karate kid movie(s), even I could see the plot was quite similar. Except that it’s in China this time, and instead of karate, they use kung fu. And enough other differences to not give you the feeling of watching the same movie over again. For example, they didn't use the words "wax on":O

In one way using kung fu is kind of silly, as the movie’s called karatekid and not kung fu kid, but I guess it’s a reference to the old movie. Kung fu is more popular on film though, and Chinese, so I understand why they changed that part. I heard in Asia, it'll be called kung fu kid XD

On the part about the plot being in China, I absolutely love how they use Chinese people for Chinese parts, instead of the usual movie-mistake of using Chinese-looking actors who don’t speak the language. Though I might not know Chinese, I’ve watched enough to say that at least this time it sounded right.

The funny thing is how hard it was to see Jackie Chan as Chinese. Sure, when I saw him in Little big soldier I had no such problem, but when he was talking to that kid, he seemed so American for some reasonXD He did a great job however, and I’m so glad he’s gone over to more serious roles. As he’s getting older, he’s not only playing “the silly Chinese man in America” anymore. Though he is good at the comedy-style roles and fighting, I think he’s also so good at playing the wise martial-arts master like he’s done here. It sort of has a different aura in his newest films, even when he uses comedy.
Jackie Chan is aaawesome^^

On the other starring actor, Jaden Smith, I must say he’s quite a promising one. The acting was good. Not just for a kid, but as an actor. The fighting tricks were good as well. If he takes his looks after his parents, and don’t start with drugs and stuff, he could go pretty far.

The display of kung fu and China in this movie is sure to bring some more tourists and motivate some martial artists. They have these powerful scenes with Dres training, professionals training, and beautiful surroundings. The whole atmosphere of the movie is so well made.

Of course you have the movie-fact of how anyone can become better in weeks than people who’s been training almost their whole lives. But one must realize it makes more interesting movies than “we shall meet in ten years to prove who’s the greatest”XD At least not in Hollywood I guess.

Wow, this became really long:S But it’s really a good movie, and highly recommended. Maybe I even liked it better than the original:P

True Legend / Beggar Su

Rating: 3/6

Drunken fist is just about the best element in martial arts movies, so I was looking forward to seeing this one. Too bad it’s really such a small part of the movie.

The movie is about Su Can. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be based on the story behind The Drunken Fist, but it’s hard to tell. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, war hero Su Can returns home to his beloved wife Ying and their son, leaving an important position to his adopted brother Yuan. Yuan is also the brother of So’s wife.
After six years Yuan comes back a lot paler and consumed by Dark Martial Arts, for payback on Su’s father for killing the father of Yuan and Ying.
He clearly has a sister complex.
He severely injures Su, but Su and Ying manage to escape. Their son is however held captive. Over many long and difficult months, Su recovers and trains with the help of a mysterious Bearded Man and his apprentice, Lord Wushu. They are cool.
His wife unfortunately goes to get their son (idiot), and he don’t manage to save her though he battles Yan(now even paler).

After this, Su becomes a drunk and a beggar, with his son by his side. This becomes almost like another story, and where the drunken fist appears.

Though I was kind of disappointed by the lack of drunken fist, the movie wasn’t all that bad. It might not be a really captivating movie, even if the storyline is kind of complicated. The action sequences were cool though, as expected. I haven't really seen thousands of martial arts movies(yet), but there were some stuff I hadn’t seen before. That way, it wasn’t all that predictable, which is a big pluss.
Still, they had the right elements to make the story deeper, so I think they could’ve made more out of it. Some parts, and scenes, were really good though.
I was surpriced by the big part the wife had in the movie, she's not just some screaming fragile creature lurking in the backround. She has a character of her own, which you don't see that often, except if they're an expert in martial arts etc.

Good movie, but not great.
